Meet the owners - Back of Beyond Touring, Camping & Glamping Park

Back of Beyond Touring, Camping and Glamping Park
is a peaceful 30-acre family run park, just for adults, with woodland and lakes, in a unique location on the Dorset/ Hampshire border. The location means that Hampshire and the New Forest, Bournemouth and the south coast, and also Dorset, are all easily accessible from the park. We spoke to owners, Martin and Victoria Bowrey to get more information about the site.

How long have you been running your campsite for?
We’ve been running our site since 2013.

How did you first become owners of the site/what made you want to own and run a campsite? We bought the campsite because we wanted to take on a new customer service-oriented business. We had been camping in this area many times.

Tell us a little about your site and how it first began?
We know that Back of Beyond has been a campsite since the 1960s.

What did you do before becoming the owners of this site?
We had a photographic shop in the West End of London.

What do you like most about being a campsite owner/manager?
It’s very rewarding as we have a great team and we enjoy living in this area.

What are the challenges?
We have to be able to turn our hand to just about anything from maintenance and outdoor work to office work, HR management and health and safety!

What is a typical day like for you?
There’s no such thing for us as every day is different. While the park has been closed we’ve been busy catching up with admin and doing work outside.

What do you feel makes your site special and appealing to the guests who return every year?
We have 30 acres which means there’s plenty of space for people to relax, explore and get close to nature. We put a lot of effort into nature conservation and sustainability. We have about 19 acres of woodland and heathland where dogs can run off the lead, with a pitch ’n’ putt course and a boules pitch in this area.

Part of our park is in a Site of Special Scientific Interest and guests love to sit by the wildlife lakes or the river that flows through this area. We take great pride in keeping our facilities as pristine as possible and we’re constantly working to improve the park.

Last year we started up an outdoor pop-up bar which proved very popular as people can sit outside at a distance and enjoy the atmosphere. Guests also like to sit by a fire pit at night as not all sites allow them, and many make the most of the visiting takeaways.

Guests love to come back to this area because there’s so much to see and do and so many beautiful places to explore from here. Within a few minutes’ drive you’re in the New Forest. There are It would take a lifetime to do all the walks along cliff tops, coastal paths, shingle beaches and rivers, through nature reserves or around the many gardens open to the public. Usually, during the summer, there’s lots going on with local food festivals, country shows and concerts.

What do you love about the region your site is based in? Do you have any favourite locations/attractions?
The New Forest is an amazing place and we love walking there as well as along the coast and in our local country parks. There are so many wonderful walks in the area it’s hard to pick a favourite!

What do you like to do on a rare day off?
Usually, we’d catch up with family and friends, but when we couldn’t because of lockdown we went running, took walks with the dog and relaxed at home.
