Meet the owners - Highfield Farm Touring Park, Cambridgeshire

Highfield Farm Touring Park is set in attractive, undulating Cambridgeshire countryside, and there are many quiet villages nearby. The city of Cambridge is close by, along with many activities nearby such as golf, fishing and horse riding. Facilities include electric hook-ups, hardstanding or grass pitches and modern toilet/shower blocks. There's a 1.5 mile walk around the perimeter of the farm providing excellent views of the countryside.

We asked owner Beverley to share some information about this family-run site, its history and what she enjoys about being a campsite owner.

Highfield Farm TeamHow long have you been running your campsite for?
We have been running the site for 51 years now.

How did you first become owners of the site/what made you want to own and run a campsite?
My father let tourists to Cambridge pitch their tents in the horses’ meadow and things grew from there and I carried on his legacy after he passed away.

What did you do before becoming the owner of this site?
Nothing, it’s all I’ve done since I left school 42 years ago. I grew up with it.

What do you like most about being a campsite owner/manager?
Meeting new people, welcoming back regular campers that have now become friends and making people's holidays enjoyable.

What are the challenges?
Keeping everyone happy and things running smoothly, including fixing problems as they arise.

What is a typical day like for you?
6am start to collect all the paper and milk orders, getting the shop ready for opening at 8am, welcoming and serving campers throughout the day and making sure everyone is happy. Maintaining the landscapes of the park such as cutting the grass and hedges, cleaning the facilities and entertaining campers before locking the gate at 11pm to do it all again the next day.

What do feel makes your site special and appealing to the guests who return every year?
The friendliness and helpfulness of all the staff making them feel welcome and at home.

What do you love about the region your site is based in? Do you have any favourite locations/attractions?
We are set in beautiful countryside with plenty of lovely walks and very good for cycling because it’s so flat. In the city centre of Cambridge there are beautiful colleges to see by punting down the River Cam, museums to suit everyone, shopping arcades and lots of historical pubs. Duxford Air Museum is just down the road with regular air shows throughout the year. We have lots of National Trust properties locally including Wimpole Hall only five miles away with its lovely gardens and farm. Also a short drive away is Ely cathedral, Newmarket Racecourse and lots more!

What do you like to do on a rare day off?
We don’t have a day off in the season but we do treat ourselves to a lovely holiday in the winter when the site is closed.
