Spotlight on: Back of Beyond Touring Park
Back of Beyond is a great campsite for a peaceful break, as it’s adults-only and set in 30 acres of private parkland and woodland and holds a David Bellamy Gold Conservation Award.
With two lakes and plenty of walks (including dog-friendly) and benches conveniently located here and there, it’s perfect for a relaxing stroll and a spot of wildlife-watching. At night, it’s dark on site, so you can also enjoy some stargazing – but don’t forget to pack a torch! Facilities, however, are lit at night and these are also well-appointed. There are four heated toilet and shower blocks and a disabled suite with easy access.
Apart from the usual amenities, like washing-up facilities and Elsan toilet disposal points, the site also has warm water dog wash facilities, and an electric charging station for phones, tablets, etc (for those staying on non-electric pitches). Best of all is the shop at reception, which stocks a whole array of local produce, including honey from Back of Beyond’s own bees.
Outside the shop is a seating area with tables and chairs arranged around a pretty pond, which is the ideal spot for making use of the free WiFi, with a coffee from the self-service machine in the shop, or an ice cream. The site is licensed to sell alcohol, too, and the shop stocks a good selection of local ales and gins, as well as wine.
But, if you fancy a bit of a night out, you can make use of the facilities at Shamba Holidays, which is just a few yards down the lane. Here, you’ll find a bar that serves food and often has live music.
Being located right on the Dorset/Hampshire border, Back of Beyond makes the perfect base for exploring the Jurassic Coast and the New Forest alike. We chose to visit Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door during our stay. It’s about a 30-minute drive, and it is worth noting that there is a large car park at Lulworth Cove (run by the National Trust) that has a motorhome-specific parking area where £15 allows for all-day parking.
