Spotlight on: Longnor Wood Holiday Park

16/12/2019

Sitting atop a hill, the views from the campsite are rather special – especially on a crisp, sunny morning when the valleys below are still enveloped in the early mist.

Longnor Wood Holiday Park is a go-to campsite for us during the winter months. It’s open most of the year, offers great facilities and is perfectly located within the Peak District National Park. What more could you want for an out-of-season getaway?

The campsite is quite small with just over 50 serviced pitches and, as these are divided over several areas, it feels nice and secluded, wherever you stay. Being an adult-only site, it’s wonderfully peaceful, too. Facilities-wise, there’s a shower and toilet block, which is heated and has radio for company. Then there’s a well-appointed kitchen with a microwave, fridge freezer and sinks for washing up. Next to this is a dog room with a heated shower. There is a small shop located at the reception that stocks the usual camping basics including locally sourced eggs, bacon, sausages and bread, and you can order a morning paper here and make use of the free WiFi.

The village of Longnor is about a mile away, and there is a footpath through the fields if you prefer not to walk on the road. It’s a pretty place with a couple of pubs, a café and a fish and chip shop. If you enjoy a country walk, it’s well worth continuing on to Earl Sterndale (a couple of miles away) too, where you can explore High Wheeldon and hike the Dragon’s Back.

It’s a pretty seven-mile drive from Longnor to the spa town of Buxton, which is also well worth a visit during your stay. Stop for a coffee at Cavendish Arcade, which is sited within the original thermal baths – it’s an interesting building that has the most amazing domed, stained glass roof. Nearby is St Ann’s Well, where you can fill up on mineral water before you head home, too!
