Spotlight on: Trevella Park
Set close to the beach at Crantock and only a few miles from the resort of Newquay, Trevella Park makes for a great base for exploring Cornwall, in a tranquil countryside location.
There are a variety of pitches to choose from, ranging from grass to fully serviced hardstanding. We opted for the ultimate in touring luxury – a premium en suite pitch, which is both fully serviced and has the bonus of your own private toilet, shower and washbasin in a wooden cabin by the pitch. Other site facilities include shower blocks, a laundry, shop, takeaway, fishing, outdoor pool and crazy golf.
For our first night we drove four miles into Newquay, parking at Fistral Beach Car Park, and enjoyed fish and chips at Rick Stein Fistral while watching the sunset over the coast. I also thoroughly recommend the delicious food at Lewinnick Lodge, just four miles from Trevella. Perched on the Pentire headland there are amazing panoramic views from the terrace. If don’t fancy negotiating the Lodge’s small car park then park at Pentire headland car park just a five-minute walk away.
When the sun chose to come out, we headed to the National Trust’s Wheal Coates (a 30-minute drive). Here you’ll find the remains of Towanroath Engine House set on cliffs full of heather and gorse. A relaxing walk along the coastal path here is simply breathtaking. Closer to the campsite there is plenty to do in Newquay itself, including an aquarium, zoo and golf course.
My main reason for travelling all the miles from home was to jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane with a tandem instructor at the Cornish Parachute Club in Perranporth. Combining my love of skydiving with a love for the coast, I would certainly recommend this as the best way to appreciate Cornwall’s stunning coastline for any adrenaline junkies out there!
