Spotlight on: Waterrow Touring Park

10/11/2018

Waterrow Touring Park is an adult-only site located on the edge of Exmoor near Wiveliscombe.

The park’s 42 touring pitches are all-weather gravel with 16A electricity, with room for awnings and a trailer or tow-car and many are fully serviced including fresh water taps, drains, free WiFi and TV booster sockets. Aerial extension leads are sold at reception.

Also at reception is a small store selling camping supplies and groceries and a freezer stocked with meat from a local award-winning butcher. Although set on a hillside the pitches are generally well levelled. Trees, shrubs and hedges provide some privacy between rows and bird feeders attract a variety of feathered friends including, on our stay, a woodpecker. At the lower end there is a small picnic area beside the river, where we were lucky enough to see kingfishers.

The dog-exercise area is thoughtfully provided with waste bins. A converted barn houses the amenities including a wet room for disabled guests, a reading room with a ‘book-swap’ and a selection of tourist information, a covered seating area and a microwave oven and coffee machine. Wheelchair users may want to request a pitch near the barn as the gravel paths and inclines may prove hard work for manual wheelchairs.

The site provides a pamphlet of suggested circular walks in the surrounding countryside and accessible buses run from the main gate to Taunton and Dulverton and there is a pub 400 yards from the entrance. Suitable for visiting the Exmoor National Park, a steam railway and towns such as Taunton and Dunster (with its beautiful National Trust-owned castle, Waterrow is open all year and offers seasonal activities including watercolour painting classes, Christmas decoration prizes and a New Year coach tour.
