Meet the owners - Back of Beyond Touring, Camping & Glamping Park
02/02/2025
Back of Beyond Touring, Camping & Glamping Park is a 30-acre park nestled in Dorset woodlands, close to the New Forest National Park. A park exclusively for adults, Back of Beyond prides itself on its tranquillity and proximity to nature.
Choose from fully serviced pitches, cosy glamping units or wild camping. A dog-friendly park, there’s 18 acres of woodlands for off-lead adventures. Monty’s Bar, built as a lockdown project, has gone from strength to strength and is a popular addition to the park, serving local spirits and ales. The site is owned by husband and wife team Martin and Victoria Bowrey.
How long have you been running your campsite?
In 2025 we will celebrate our 12th season of running Back of Beyond.
Tell us a little about your site and how it first began?
The campsite has been in place since the 1960s, but when we took it on it was tired and dated and needed investment. Over the years, we have made gradual improvements and have taken the park to being an AA 5-star platinum site.
What did you do before becoming the owners of this site?
We ran our own photography business in London.
What made you want to own and run a campsite?
We wanted to raise our young family outside of London and thought that running a campsite would offer a better lifestyle for us all.
What do you like most about being a campsite owner?
Meeting the variety of people that come through the gates to stay on our park. We take great pride in our park and it’s a delight to be able to see people enjoying their holidays here.
What are the challenges?
Challenges can range in all kinds from blocked drains to tricky customers. We all pull together as a team though to get through those more challenging days.
What is a typical day like for you?
There really is no typical day for us, we are involved in all different aspects of the park from checking in guests to working on marketing campaigns. It keeps us busy and we love that the variety that running a campsite brings.
What do you feel makes your site special and appealing to the guests who return every year?
Guests comment on how peaceful the park is. They love having Monty’s Bar on site but that we purposely keep it to reduced hours so after 8pm, the park is peaceful. A lot of our guests bring their dogs so they in particular, love taking their four-legged friends on off-lead walks through our woodlands.
What do you love about the region your site is based in?
We love taking time out to explore the local beaches, particularly Southbourne beach (this one is also dog-friendly and a lot quieter than nearby Bournemouth beach). The New Forest National Park is also within short reach of our park, we love spending time there walking, cycling or popping to a local pub for a Sunday lunch. Autumn is a particularly beautiful time of year in this area with the fantastic autumnal display on the trees.
What do you like to do on a rare day off?
We love to explore the local area with our dog, Muswell. Plus, Martin occasionally goes back to London to watch his favourite football team play.
