Spotlight on: Burrowhayes Farm, Somerset

07/05/2026

Staying at Burrowhayes Farm feels less like booking a campsite and more like settling into a quiet corner of the countryside.

Tucked into the Horner Valley within Exmoor National Park, it’s the sort of place where you wake up to birdsong, step out of the ’van, and immediately see views rising towards Dunkery Beacon in the distance.

Ideal for walking along the coast or through wooded valleys, Burrowhayes has been welcoming visitors for over 50 years, and that experience shows. Everything runs smoothly, but without feeling formal. There are grass pitches with electric hook-ups, and a few fully serviced hardstanding pitches, too.

Some pitches sit right beside the River Horner, and that gentle sound of the water would make it easy to switch off and relax. For families or groups without their own motorhome, Burrowhayes also offers static caravans for hire.

The heated toilet and shower block includes an accessible room, and there’s a launderette with coin-operated machines if you’re staying a while. The well-stocked shop at reception is handy for basics, which saves an extra trip out.

One unexpected highlight is the riding stables next door; you can actually book escorted rides through the surrounding countryside (or children can be led on horseback), which adds something a bit different to a walking-focused stay.

And walking really is the main event here. You can head straight from the campsite into Horner Woods, following peaceful riverside paths on a circular route that feels wonderfully unspoilt.

About half a mile away is Horner Tea Gardens, ideal for a mid-walk break, while a 20-minute stroll from site brings you to Porlock, with its shops, galleries, pubs and cafés. From there, it’s easy to hop on a bus to Porlock Weir and spend some time by the little harbour and pebbled beach.

After a full day exploring, coming back to sit outside and listen to the gentle stream felt like a real treat. If you’re looking for a peaceful base to enjoy the beauty of Exmoor at a gentle pace, this is a lovely spot to do it.
