Spotlight on: Flaxton Meadows, North Yorkshire

01/06/2023

This adults-only, eco campsite is ideal for anyone wanting to visit the historic city of York as it is located in the countryside, yet within a short drive of several city park and ride services.

Flaxton Meadows is a natural haven, feeling miles from anywhere. There are hardstanding and grass pitches available, with electric hook-up. A nice touch that I noticed during my visit are the caravan pitching information boards – each one features a drawing of a different famous vehicle, such as the Batmobile and General Lee.

On site there are toilets, showers, an accessible bathroom, a launderette, a pretty lake area and the Champers for Campers bar. Electricity is generated from the site’s own natural resource system (involving ground-source heat pumps and solar panels), while the underfloor heating is powered from this, too.

There is a mown wildlife walk around the edge of the site and the car park for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Strensall Common is only a mile away. A golf club is also just down the road from the site.

Dogs are welcome on site at Flaxton Meadows and two 1.5-acre fenced exercise areas are available half a mile away, charged at £6 for 30 minutes.
