Spotlight on: Hendre Mynach Touring & Camping Park, Gwynedd

26/05/2018

Barmouth is a popular place with families in summer due to its seaside location, and Hendre Mynach is an ideal place to stay because it’s a short walk from the beach.

It's also just an easy stroll along the promenade into the town. However, as this site is open most of the year round, it’s also a wonderful place to stay if you fancy a peaceful, out of season getaway. It’s dog friendly, too.

The campsite is level and is divided into several sections, so it never feels crowded. Both gravelled and grass pitches are available with 10-amp electric hook-up points and taps, and are also sectioned-off with hedges so that each pitch feels private. Although the train line divides the site from the beach, I wasn’t disturbed by it, as the trains trundle through slowly and didn’t seem too frequent.

There are a couple of toilet and shower blocks built in keeping with the local architecture. The décor inside is a little dated, but they offer everything you’ll need for a comfortable stay. There’s also a laundry, washing up and waste disposal points with drive-on drains.

At reception, there’s an off licence and shop that stocks all the camping basics and also offers WiFi and bicycle hire. From here, it’s a short walk up a steep hill to get to the main road where you’ll find bus stops and a restaurant or two. Although you can walk into Barmouth this way, the alternative route along the beach or promenade is much more pleasant. Barmouth is a pretty little place with lots of shops and cafés, and a quaint harbour. It sits at the mouth of the estuary and the wooden viaduct here, opened in 1867, is very impressive. It’s well worth taking a walk over the footbridge and continuing along the disused railway footpath. To round off your day, stop at The Last Inn, which dates back to the fifteenth century and is decked out like a ship – it serves a good selection of real ales and excellent local food.
