Spotlight on: Hurley Riverside Park

I love this site for its proximity to central London (45 minutes by train from Henley-on-Thames) for when you want the bright lights of the city, yet it is located in beautiful countryside right by the River Thames.

A gate at the edge of one of the touring fields on the campsite leads onto a vast grassed area and to the river. Here, you can walk alongside the Thames for as long as you want. I took a short 15-minute wander down to pretty Hurley Lock to look at the boats and then headed into Hurley village, where there are a couple of pubs and a shop, before taking the same route back to the site. If you prefer to sit and watch the world go by, then there are several benches at various point along the riverside – an ideal spot for a picnic.

The campsite is largely given over to residential park homes that stretch out pretty much all the way to Hurley. But, it still has plenty of room for 200 touring pitches in nicely hedged-off fields. Many of these pitches are hardstanding with electric hook-up or you can upgrade to premium pitches with 16A electric, plus waste and water connections. These are accessed over the grass. In addition, there are fully serviced RV pitches accessed directly from the roadway.

Hurley Riverside has three clean and functional toilet blocks, as well as an accessible toilet behind reception, along with a little shop and a handy launderette. There is also a play area and a nature trail.

A must-visit in the area is of course pretty Henley-on-Thames, a 10-minute drive away. With a selection of shops, restaurants, boat trips, and of course the annual Royal Regatta, this is the perfect place to spend a day out. I enjoyed ambling the path alongside the river in the sunshine, admiring all the boats and the many historical buildings.
