Spotlight on: Fishery Creek Touring Park, Hampshire

When you love being by the water like I do, a campsite alongside a tidal creek, and with a boating lake adjacent, sounds like a dream.

So that’s why I chose to head to Fishery Creek Touring Park, on Hayling Island. Situated on the south coast, between Portsmouth and Chichester, Hayling Island is connected to the mainland by a road bridge. Simply driving over this bridge, noticing the calm waters on either side, put me straight into the holiday mood.

The site is a mixture of well-drained grass and shingle pitches. There are various-sized pitches depending on the size of your unit. The most popular pitches are those on the creek front, since they enjoy the best views. Every pitch has electric hook-up and there are various water points across the site. The shower block was clean and tidy, there are accessible facilities, an undercover dishwashing area, plus a shop. During my stay, I had lunch in the site’s Galleon Bistro, which also offers evening meals and takeaway.

Fishery Creek has a tidal slipway to enjoy various water sports on the creek. You can walk from the site to the beach, which is just over half a mile away, and you’ll also find a pub and cafés there.

Further along the coast is Hayling Island’s main beach with an amusement park and adventure golf – if you don’t fancy the extra walk, you can take the Hayling Light Railway along the seafront, which runs weekends, Wednesdays and during school holidays.

Portsmouth and Chichester are only a 30-minute drive away; however, I didn’t feel the need to leave the island as there was plenty to keep me occupied. There’s a nature reserve to walk to that’s just over a mile away, along with several golf courses within a few miles. Another option is to visit the Hayling Island Donkey Sanctuary, which is open between mid-March and December.

I really enjoyed my warm, sunny visit to Fishery Creek Touring Park and look forward to returning again to this scenic waterside site.
