Spotlight on: Tyddyn Llwyn Camping, Caravan & Touring Park, Wales

17/10/2022

The first time my husband and I stayed at Tyddyn Llwyn we had such a wonderful time, we vowed we really must return…

This was our second stay and we had an equally good time. The site itself is really lovely and picturesque, with plenty of flat pitches and many on tiered terraces with great views.

We were lucky to get a spot on what we named the ‘penthouse terrace’, as we were above the site and had stunning views. The woods behind our pitch were full of bluebells and gorse.

Keen to explore from the campsite, we investigated a footpath that goes up a hill behind the site, Moel-y-Gest. We then walked out to the coast and along to Porthmadog, and watched little sailing boats bobbing in the water. We also went to the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways where we found a bustling platform with steam trains coming in and out.

The next day, we visited Caernarfon Castle, a 30-minute drive. The castle is claimed to be recognised around the world as one of the greatest buildings of the Middle Ages. Together with Conwy Castle, Beaumaris Castle and Harlech Castle, they now form a World Heritage Site. At Caernarfon, it’s a fortress-palace on the banks of the River Seiont, and we found plenty of parking at the height barrier-free castle car park at the harbour.

Tyddyn Llwyn has its own bar and smokehouse restaurant, and it puts on a number of events. During our stay, there was a quiz night, and a music night with local musicians turning up for a jamming session, which was really good fun! The site is very well appointed with a shop at a reception, tidy loo blocks and washing-up facilities, among other things.

It’s within walking distance of Porthmadog, with a number of shops and eateries, and if you can’t manage the hill on the way back, the bus will drop you at the site entrance, too.
